Hiking in the Monti Ernici

Walking as a Way of Being

There is a way of hiking that has nothing to do with performance. No stopwatch, no crowds, nothing to prove. The Monti Ernici mountains — just 70 kilometres from Rome and a short drive from Fiuggi — offer exactly this: untouched trails, genuine silence, and the right measure of effort. The kind that makes you sleep deeply at night.

WHY THE MONTI ERNICI — AND NOT THE DOLOMITES

  • Proximity. 70 km from Rome. Arrive in an hour, hike, have lunch, return — no pre-dawn departures, no elaborate planning required.
  • Authentic solitude. While the most famous alpine trails welcome hundreds of hikers a day, here you might encounter 10 to 15 people on the busiest of weekends. Silence, which has become a luxury elsewhere, is still the norm here.
  • Certified biodiversity. Wolves, Marsican brown bears (a critically rare subspecies native to central Italy), roe deer, golden eagles. This is not a marketing claim — it is documented in the Regional Natural Park's official wildlife reports. The ancient beech and oak forests produce concentrations of terpenes — the aromatic compounds linked to stress reduction and wellbeing — well above average.
  • Layered history. These paths were once walked by shepherds driving their flocks between summer and winter pastures — a centuries-old practice known as transumanza. Medieval monasteries emerge from the forest. Stone boundary markers still trace the old border between the Papal States and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The mountain here is also memory.
  • A generous season. Hiking season runs from March to November. The Dolomites are spectacular — but six months of snow and peak-season crowds are part of the package. Here, the mountains are accessible, unhurried, and yours.

3 Routes, 3 Levels

VALLE DEI SANTI — Easy Collepardo | 2 hours | 6 km

At the heart of the Monti Ernici, along ancient shepherd's paths once walked by medieval ascetics. A mountain stream reveals small cascades and emerald-green natural pools, crossed by wooden footbridges. Nothing heroic — just the right amount of effort to earn your lunch.

MONTE CACUME — Intermediate Patrica | 5 hours | 7 km

The summit Dante immortalised in the Divine Comedy as the Ante-Purgatory. The trail features installations inspired by his verses, ancient drinking fountains and glimpses of the medieval village below. At the top, a 360° panorama and statues of Dante and Beatrice. We will not call it unforgettable — but it will likely prove difficult to forget.

MONTE CREPACUORE — Challenging Campocatino | 6 hours | 10 km

A natural watchtower on the ancient frontier between the Papal States and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies — still marked by a boundary stone bearing both coats of arms. An open ridge walk leads to the Fonte del Pozzotello spring, set within a natural amphitheatre of peaks. The effort is proportional to the privilege: very few make it this far.

A Trek Made to Measure (literally)

Every experience is designed individually — around your fitness level, your interests, your pace. You will not find groups of thirty people walking in single file: we do not accept bookings beyond fifteen participants, for reasons of both safety and quality.

The route unfolds through pristine, little-known landscapes where nature, history and tradition coexist in perfect balance. Ancient paths, wide and luminous views, traces of a past that still speaks to the present.

From the summits of the Monti Ernici, the gaze takes in some of the most striking and quietly elegant panoramas in the entire Lazio region. We do not promise "unforgettable emotions" or "immersive sensory journeys." We promise silence, slowness, and the freedom to walk with whoever you choose — at the pace that is yours.
