Fiuggi – Rome: 3 Days Discovering the street of Gladiators
1° DAY: CANTERNO LAKE, FUMONE CASTLE, ALATRI THE FORTRESS OF THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR
A fascinating trip between history and nature. It starts from the hotel with the bikes through the lovely Canterno Lake nature reserve, a real oasis of peace and beauty.
The journey continues towards the castle of Fumone, among the oldest in Europe. The fort takes its name from its function as sentinel, in fact, through all the middle age, in case of enemy invasion was given the alarm from the castle to the roman outpost. Huge smoke signals were raised at the first sign of alarm allowing a ready defense of villages and populations. The history of the castle of Fumone is also linked with the tragic fate of Pope Celestine V in 1296 locked up for life by Pope Boniface VIII in a remote cell (now open) until the end of his days.
Continuing to ride you turn off for the town of Alatri famous for the mystery of its cyclopean walls made of boulders perfectly embedded on each other that made the acropolis an impregnable stronghold. Alatri is also renowned for being a very popular outpost of the Knights Templar that descended from the street Francigena along the Appian Way to get to Puglia and board to fight in the Holy Land. Exceptional is the recent discovery of “Christ in the Labyrinth”, a fresco attributed to the Knights Templar full of mystery and esoteric meanings not yet known.
2° DAY: THE MONASTERY OF TRISULTI AND THE ERNICI MOUNTAINS
Among the most fascinating monasteries of Italy, the Certosa di Trisulti dominates the Ciociaria’s rolling hills. The route starts from the hotel and runs smoothly between ancient streets that runs alongside the town of Vico nel Lazio with the famous castle with 12 towers and Collepardo, leading to the wonderful monastery of Trisulti surrounded by old woods.

The skilful work of the monks and the ancient culture in the cataloging and study of healing herbs make the visit to the monastery an unusual experience and certainly fascinating. The monks of the “Certosa di Trisulti” are also famous for the preparation of chocolate and several liqueurs that you can taste in the quiet and charm of a timeless place.
